Charles 'Charlie' Stevens

Above is Charles 'Charlie' Stevens (1893 - 1964).  In the photo above left - Stevens is 'Breed' versus Johnny Mack Brown in the serial, THE OREGON TRAIL (Universal, 1939).  The color shot on the right is a crop of Stevens from a lobby card from GERONIMO (Paramount, 1939) which featured Chief Thunder Cloud as the famous Apache Chief.

Born in Arizona, Stevens performed with the Miller Bros. 101 Ranch Wild West show prior to his Hollywood career. He became friends with Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. and appeared in most of all of his films. And he portrayed 'Injun Joe' in the 1930 version of TOM SAWYER which starred Jackie Coogan and Junior Durkin.  Stevens' film credits began around 1914 and end circa 1961.  He also appeared in a bunch of 1950s TV westerns.

Hollywood biographies - which are always suspect - have Charlie as the grandson of Apache Chief Geronimo. No! His parents were prominent Arizona political figure George H. Stevens and his second wife Eloisa Michalena/Michelena. Census, death certificates, etc. indicate that Eloisa and the Michalena/Michelena family were from the Sonora, Mexico area ... and were Mexican, not Native American.

There's a profile of Charles Stevens on the Old Corral.  Go back to the Old Corral homepage, and scroll down the left side menu to the Villains & Supporting Players section ... or click HERE and that bio will open in a separate window / tab.

Although some of the data is incomplete or inaccurate, the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) has information on Charles Stevens: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0828314/
