Above are Frank Lackteen (as the 'Vulture') and Gordon Elliott in Elliott's breakthrough role in the serial, THE GREAT ADVENTURES OF WILD BILL HICKOK (Columbia, 1938). And the answer is "No". Lackteen didn't succeed in burning Elliott at the stake.

Bill Elliott starred in three serials at Columbia Pictures, and the above lobby card shows Wild Bill and Carmen Morales in his final Columbia chapterplay, THE VALLEY OF VANISHING MEN (Columbia, 1942). That was also Elliott's last cliffhanger. Soon after making VANISHING MEN, Elliott signed with Republic Pictures where his contract excluded him from doing any more serial work.

"Frank James" was portrayed by a moustached Steve Darrell (in buckskins) and Clayton Moore (upper right) was "Jesse James". Shown bottom left is George J. Lewis and heroine Noel Neill is pictured bottom right.
