The Best (and Worst) of the West!

Reviews and Observations on B-Westerns

by Boyd Magers

Boyd Magers has been providing videotapes of westerns and serials for several decades.  And he also publishes Western Clippings and is the author/co-author of several film related books.

Boyd's reviews will cover mostly B westerns, with an occasional commentary on a cliffhanger or A grade oater.

Several years ago, ye Old Corral webmaster looked at some options for Boyd's reviews, and some of the issues and background are as follows:

Doing pages on individual heroes was just too big an effort - a multitude of pages would be required - plus the reviews on heroes who were part of a duo or trio would have to appear multiple places (like an Elliott/Ritter oater would have to be listed on Tex's page and Wild Bill's page). I also looked at doing the reviews by production company, but that would also require many webpages ... plus there were questions on categorizing certain films. A good example are the John Wayne Lone Star adventures which were released by Monogram. Do those go under a Monogram page ... a Misc page ... or would I have to create a Lone Star page. Some folks suggested that I alphabetize the listing - that would be nice, but I don't have the time to manually cut'n'paste several thousand reviews into alphabetically arranged webpages. And then continue with that cut'n'paste and alphabetizing process as Boyd provides his new reviews every few weeks. Another option was to simply delete the oldest reviews. However, I did not think Old Corral regulars and newcomers would want those reviews to be deleted. The option I selected was simply to archive older reviews onto separate webpages. The only criteria was that the webpages would download in about 60 seconds on a 56kb modem.

During Spring, 2007, Boyd and I took another gander at the reviews. One approach that was relatively simple was to have separate webpages on western SERIALS and western SHORTS. As of late May, 2007, the serials and shorts pages went online and the links are shown at the top of this page.
