(Courtesy of Les Adams) Astor re-release lobby card from HANDS ACROSS THE ROCKIES (Columbia, 1941).The baddie on the far left is Kenneth MacDonald, a frequent brains heavy at Columbia in westerns as well as shorts with the Three Stooges. (Courtesy of Les Adams) Above is the title lobby card from the Astor release of Bill Elliott's THE RETURN OF DANIEL BOONE (Columbia, 1941). He's got his arm around Betty Miles who is best remembered as the great rider and stunt woman at Monogram with Tom Keene and the Trail Blazers. In the upper right photo, Elliott has the drop on Bud Osborne and Francis Walker and Ray Bennett is kneeling in front of the safe. |
Not an overnight sensation
by Les Adams
Elliott made 209 sound films comprised of 120 features, nine shorts, three serials and 77 westerns, and starred in 70 of the westerns and the three serials. I didn't realize until I made this filmography that I've actually seen all but about 15 of the films he was in, and have over 112 of his films ... well, some of them aren't "his" films, but he is in them.
He had a strange career in some ways. A lot of actors pay their dues and toil in the trenches for several years but Elliott spent 13 years (1925 to 1938) doing that before he ever made the top of the cast list, and most leading-men types either make it in a few years or give up. Many actors made as many or more films at Warners as Elliott did (89 films), but they were usually character-types such as Milt Kibbee, Jack Mower, Cliff Saum, Matt McHugh, et al, but Elliott would drift back and forth between just dress extras and dance extras (he didn't come out and shuffle off to Buffalo or do a tap or that kind of dancing) with no credit, and actually having a pivitol role and billed about the middle of the cast, and most of those have-a-name, do-something roles came in Warner's B-productions. I have no idea as to what his deal with Warners was, but it must have been some kind of "be-available" players contract, as he wouldn't have gotten that much work by showing up for casting cattle-calls or through Central Casting. Maybe he and Warner's casting director were good friends. I could be mistaken, but I don't ever recall reading any kind of interview written by some film historian that actually discussed his career in detail, especially his early pre-Hickok days.
I'm certain he got a lot of roles just because he was taller than most actors of the time and looked good in tuxes, and complimented the looks of the female attached to his arm --- lots of gigolos and slick-types and some ethnic stuff with pencil-thin moustaches. I watched FUGITIVE IN THE SKY on tape recently and he played a passenger named Ramon Duval, who gets knifed by Nedda Harrigan (for some past indiscretion) while he is sleeping. Also looked again at LADY IN THE MORGUE, where he has about as much footage as Preston Foster and is central to everything that happens. In those, and every film I've seen him in prior to the Hickok serial, the thing that stands out the most about the actor named Gordon Elliott is that there is absolutely nothing that stands out or even suggests a "screen presence" of any kind. I don't make "best" lists, but on any list I compile of "my favorite" western actor, Bill Elliott will be somewhere in the top four or five. Always. Actually, he is 3rd. But, aside from Westerns, he also qualifies as one of the most-forgettable actors I've ever seen.
The point of the above is that I don't think there was ever a journeyman actor who labored in obscurity for such a long time and was uncredited as much as credited in over 120 films, who got a role in a serial (or anything else for that matter) and spun it off to make a career that lasted another 20 years and was always first-billed and the star after that. (William Boyd getting the role of Hopalong Cassidy is not the same situation --- Boyd had been there and done that before Cassidy. And Wayne in STAGECOACH is not the same either.)
I don't even claim to know exactly how Elliott got cast as the lead in that serial --- and I'm not certain anybody else knows and, if they do, I haven't read about it. It appears he left whatever his situation was at Warners in late 1937 and free-lanced around and got better roles and billing (sometimes) in the next 13 films he made prior to Hickok. And while he was pretty good as the villain in ROLL ALONG, COWBOY and BOOTS AND SADDLES (Harry Woods evidently wasn't available), I still didn't see anything that would make me believe he could be a western star. Actually, I'm glad I wasn't casting THE GREAT ADVENTURES OF WILD BILL HICKOK or, else, Wild Bill Elliott, my personal 3rd Favorite Western Star wouldn't have existed.
Elliott had a variety of name variations during his career. He was billed (or got paid) as:
